Meet Miguel, rescued from the streets of Mexico, where he was very malnourished. He is quickly reaching his goal weight of 65 lbs. He is approximately 4 years old, neutered, heartworm negative, received a clean bill of health from the vet and is up to date on his vaccinations.
Since entering his foster home on July 1st, he has quickly learned how to be a family dog. He has discovered that toys, balls, and frozen Kongs are treasured items and that dog beds are pure luxury.
From Miguel’s Foster Mom:
Miguel is an adventurous, active dog who enjoys our camping trips and daily hikes in the forests. He has been training hard on his basic obedience and currently has learned his name, sit, down, come, leave it, and stay. I would recommend further obedience training to help him channel his excitement. In addition, we have started his e-collar training for his recall. He can successfully be off leash for his walks.
Miguel loves playing fetch either in the yard or out on his daily walks. As much as he loves to play and run, he is very focused on his family. Having been on the streets for a few years, he craves human attention and is happy to curl up and snuggle.
Although Miguel is being fostered alongside our dog and is happy to have a friend he would be happy being an only dog as well. After having struggled for food for so long on the streets he does have some resource guarding tendencies with his foster dog brother. A verbal correction quickly reminds him that the behavior is not permitted.
Car rides are another favorite activity. He can be crated in a vehicle or happy to lay quietly in the back seat. A crate in the home is still a work in progress; he is content to sleep in the crate at night with the door open. He does become anxious if the door is closed and takes some time to relax. I would recommend an experienced dog home where he is able to get his daily exercise and continued obedience training. He is progressing so very quickly and is well on his way to being a great family dog.
We are grateful to Miquel’s foster family for exposing him to many new activities and working with him on obedience. So much was new to him and he was very wound up at first. While he gets still very excited at times, he is able to relax more and more.
After a month in his foster home, he is a perfect dog when there is a house full of people over for dinner. He sits and lets everyone love on him (of course), and while everyone eats, he lays down by the table and does not beg. Such a good boy!
Miguel will find his calm with good leadership/training, attention and of course, a lot of exercise! He is good with older kids, good with dogs (though a bit intimidated and reactive to large intact males). Miguel has a strong prey drive so we do not recommend small animals such as cats and chickens.
