Gracie
Gracie is a 72# nine month old spayed female Weimaraner in search of a new start on life. She is happy, healthy, microchipped and current on her vaccines. Gracie made her way to us via a series of vehicle and airplane transports originating from a shelter in central California where she had been relinquished.
ORIGINAL FACEBOOK POST ON HER AND HER JOURNEY
SAVING GRACE!
Gracie was surrendered in California to a shelter at age 9 months for biting her owner. OWR intervened and she is now in one of our foster homes. When surrendered, Gracie was placed in a rabies quarantine in a cell for ten days and without a rescue stepping in at the end of this period, she would have been euthanized. This is known as a “rescue only” adoption.
Gracie lived in a home with an older couple where she was no doubt loved, however she was disciplined without training. For example, they put her on a chain in the back yard when people came over to keep her from jumping on them, and she was kept in the garage at night because she counter-surfed. Two behaviors we can confirm - haha, but there are better ways to manage them!
Gracie is a love and managed to melt many hearts on her OWR journey from her cell at the shelter to a freedom car ride to an airport, to a plane ride to another airport, to another plane ride to another airport, then finally a car ride to a foster home. Gracie gave A LOT of kisses and enjoyed the attention from everyone she met.
THANK YOU! Pilots N Paws for making it possible for us to connect with the amazing volunteer pilots Shuman and Echo who flew Gracie from the East Bay to the Portland area. Because of this incredible volunteer organization, Gracie did not have to spend a very long day transferring from car to car to slowly make it to us after having been in the shelter for two weeks!
THANK YOU Luana, Frances, Deb, Myth, Laura, and Allen for helping us save this beautiful girl. We could not have rescued her without your love, compassion and tireless commitment to rescue.
As far as Gracie’s placement goes, if she does not get snatched up by her foster parents ;), in the near future will post her availability on FaceBook and her full bio with all her requirements on our website.
Love you all!
(While typing this post we realized that we did not post another recent “save” that involved Pilots N Paws and many incredible people working together to help Weimaraners in need. We’ll tell the story soon but to everyone involved in Oliver’s and Blue’s rescue, THANK YOU!)
Gracie is a sweet and affectionate young dog with boundless energy + all of the rolypoliness one would expect of a dog her age however she is severely behind in her training and currently exhibits some undesirable traits which would be expected, even perhaps endearing, in a 3 month old 20# Weimaraner but she is not that. Gracie is at this time a very large dog whose size needs to be respected as her training ramps up and her attitudes shifted :) Her very experienced foster dad/mom have no doubt that she can certainly continue on to become a model doggie citizen but there is no time to waste with pausing that journey as she transitions from foster to forever home. Her foster parents expect that her training could be completed in a handful of weeks but there will be a rather steep learning curve and transitional period where she is going to be a bit of a handful.
Traits observed: Loves affection and seeks it out from known and unknown persons but respects the authority of men more than women. She will put her paws on any elevated surface regardless of whether there is food present or not. She has responded appropriately towards the 5 other Weimaraners she is currently alongside, meaning she will flip flop alpha/submissive as required by each dog in the pack and has not engaged in any behaviors unexpected in a pack of this size. No issues have been observed around food or feeding in the vicinity of other dogs. Gracie does not seem to be startled by loud or new noises and is very inquisitive and outgoing. She is learning how to go up and down stairs. She does not yet recognize a difference between dog toys and your things which may resemble a toy (no furniture chewed). Wire crate training progressing nicely. She takes treats gently and seems to be potty trained. She will put her very large paws on you. Fondling her paws is improving though she still mouths at you. She runs like a goofy puppy so soft knees are a must when she is on the move.
What we are looking for in a potential adopter: Strong pack leading humans with the time and ability to provide consistent and constant training informed by prior success training large dogs. Must possess e-collar training experience and current ownership of said device (usage has been extremely limited but absolutely necessary in the interim). No children under 13 (she is not going to respect littles at this time). Ownership of a large wire crate. Well trained existing dog a big plus. Active household who will get her out and about when the time is right.
We are certain that Gracie will be a wonderful doggie citizen in the near future and all of the aforementioned will be a long gone memory, but she needs and deserves a specific type of household to help her get there.
